U.S. presses Tunisia’s president for swift return to democratic path

WASHINGTON, July 31 (Reuters) – U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan urged Tunisia’s president on Saturday to outline a swift return to the “democratic path” following his seizure of governing powers last Sunday, the White House said.

Tunisian President Kais Saied invoked a national emergency over the coronavirus pandemic and poor governance to dismiss the prime minister, freeze parliament and seize executive control in a move welcomed by street rallies but which his opponents branded a coup.

In a phone call, Sullivan underscored to Saied the need for “rapidly forming a new government, led by a capable prime minister to stabilize Tunisia’s economy and confront the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as ensuring the timely return of the elected parliament,” the White House National Security Council said in a statement. Swiss Private Bank Says Its Wealthy Clients Are Interested in Crypto

In a recent interview, Zeno Staub, the CEO of Swiss private banking and investment management group Vontobel Holding AG, talked about their clients’ interest in crypto.

The Vontobel CEO’s comments were made on July 27 during an interview with Bloomberg TV anchor Anna Edwards.

When Edwards Staub what Vontobel’s clients are asking for with regard to crypto, he replied:

Clients have an interest in digital assets. Clients have an interest in cryptocurrencies. We believe that the underlying technology is actually more important than a certain types of application.

We believe down the line blockchain technology is the logic consequence of the general trend of securitisation because it’s the only available technology that can create a trust without the central counterparty.

We will see major changes coming out of that going forward. What we offer to our clients is that we’ve wrapped some cryptocurrencies in a secure, convenient, easy to handle way, and clients appreciate that and allocate part of their wealth to that.

On 27 October 2017, Vontobel announced that it was expanding its Bitcoin product range by making available on the stock exchange (from 30 October 2017) “the first open-end exchange-traded bitcoin tracker certificate” and that this would provide “an interesting option for all those who believe in the cryptocurrency but don’t want to have to deal with IT administration.”

On January 4, during an interview with CNBC, Alli McCartney, a Private Wealth Advisor at UBS, explained why there is “a lot of interest” in Bitcoin among her wealthy clients.

She said:

There’s a lot of interest, and there has been a lot of interest for a significant amount of time… A lot of very wealthy individuals, even those who have made their money in very traditional finance sources, take risk. And they understand the concept of taking risk…

Biden meets with Cuban Americans as US imposes new Cuba sanctions | Joe Biden News

The administration says it is considering a range of additional options including providing internet access to Cubans.

The Biden administration announced new sanctions on Friday against Cuba’s National Revolutionary Police and its top two officials, as the US looks to increase pressure on the communist government following this month’s protests on the island.

The Police Nacional Revolcionaria and the agency’s director and deputy director, Oscar Callejas Valcarce and Eddie Sierra Arias, were targeted in the latest sanctions announced by the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control. The police are part of Cuba’s interior ministry, which was already the subject of a blanket designation by the Trump administration back in January.

“We hear the cries of freedom coming from the island. The United States is taking concerted action to bolster the cause of the Cuban people,” President Joe Biden said at the start of a White House meeting with Cuban-Americans not long after Treasury announced the sanctions.

Illegal Bitcoin (BTC) mining operation discovered in this strange place in Poland »Crypto Insiders

Bitcoin (BTC) has skyrocketed in value in recent years and thus cryptocurrency mining has become increasingly popular. And where there is money to be made, there are always some opportunists who want to get their share. In Poland a very strange story has appeared. There, a miner was caught mining crypto with stolen electricity … at police headquarters!

Gazeta Wyborccza arrived today with a elements about this strange story. An IT specialist is said to have mined crypto at the Warsaw headquarters with electricity and police equipment there. In addition to the free energy, the miner would also have benefited from the good internet connection at the desktop.

The specialist was soon caught and immediately expelled. The police spokesman said in response:

“The device he used was not connected to any police database, and the case largely involves theft of electricity,”

It is unclear how much bitcoin or crypto the miner managed to mine. However, it is clear that these are steel balls. Illegal cryptocurrency mining operations are quite common, but at police headquarters it has probably never happened before!

Recently, the Malaysian police another waltz to destroy millions of dollars worth of crypto miners. These miners were seized as part of an illegal operation that also involved theft of electricity.

It also happens from time to time in Russia. Miners still steel in 2020 $ 6.6 million in electricity to mine bitcoins for free.
