Arnold woman loses $8,800 in crypto-currency scam | Police Fire

A 35-year-old Arnold woman lost $8,800 in a scam after she got a notification on her cell phone purportedly from the FBI and Social Security Administration, Arnold Police reported.

The woman told police that on April 12 she received a text message warning her that agents from the FBI and Social Security Administration would come to her home unless he transferred $8,800 to an encrypted-code address through Bitcoin Depot, a crypto-currency ATM. The message also allegedly instructed her not to call the police, the report said.

The woman said she transferred the money at the Bitcoin Depot in the West County Center in Des Peres, according to the report.

As of April 22, none of her money had been recovered, Detective Lt. Jason Valentine said. He also said the report was forwarded to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
