Facebook partners with Coinbase for digital wallet initiative

Facebook has joined forces with Coinbase on a new effort to create a digital wallet that allows people to send money internationally without any fees.

Facebook’s Novi, which has been in the works for years, will be running pilot programs in the US and Guatemala, according to a letter from Facebook. Novi is available to anyone in the US except those living in Alaska, Nevada, New York and the US Virgin Islands.

The tool lets people send USDP — a stablecoin pegged to the price of the US dollar — which can then be withdrawn in a local currency. USDP is one of a number of cryptocurrencies pegged to the US dollar.

In a blog post, Coinbase explained that it is providing Novi with its proprietary, fully segregated cold storage capability for managing private keys called Coinbase Custody.

“Coinbase Custody is a leading crypto-native platform and custodian that securely manages $180 billion of crypto assets on its platform. Over the past nine years, Coinbase has developed deep expertise in secure and scalable crypto infrastructure, which we initially built to power our own first party…

CNWE’s cryptocurrency activity represents 25% of the global activity

Central, Northern, and Western Europe (CNWE) has received over USD 1 trillion worth of cryptocurrency over 2020, which represents 25% of global activity.

CNWE’s transaction volume grew significantly across virtually all cryptocurrencies and service types, but especially on DeFi protocols. An influx of institutional investment, signalled by large transactions, drove most of the growth, though retail activity also increased.

Large institutional cryptocurrency transaction value grew from USD 1.4 billion in July 2020 to USD 46.3 billion in June 2021, at which point it made up more than half of all CNWE activity.

Looking at CNWE’s top five services by transaction volume each month for 2020 shows the impact DeFi has had. DeFi protocols represent three to four of the top five services in most months, with Uniswap, Instadapp, and dydx making frequent appearances. Binance and Coinbase, meanwhile, remain the most popular centralised exchanges.

CNWE’s biggest trading partner is North America, followed by Eastern Asia, Central and Southern Asia, and Eastern Europe. Services contributing to this dynamic include eToro, Bitstamp, and CryptoKitties.

Cryptocurrency Lending vs. Bank Lending

The Western Balkans region is rebounding from the COVID-19-induced recession of 2020, thanks to a faster-than-expected recovery in 2021, says the latest edition of the Western Balkans Regular Economic Report, Greening the Recovery.

The outlook for the region has improved significantly, with GDP growth now projected to reach 5.9 percent in 2021, after a 3.1 percent contraction in 2020. Growth in the region is projected at 4.1 percent in 2022 and 3.8 percent in 2023.

Driven by a rapid recovery in tourism, Montenegro’s economy is projected to rebound strongly by an estimated 10.8 percent in 2021, the highest rate among the six Western Balkan countries. Strong peak summer season has supported a rebound in tourism revenues, which are likely to reach close to 75 percent of their 2019 levels, from 55 percent previously estimated.

The rebound of economic activity has boosted government revenues, which coupled with careful fiscal management have led to a reduction in fiscal deficit from 11 percent of GDP in 2020 to an estimated 4 percent in 2021. Maintaining fiscal prudence in the medium term will be critical, as uncertainties loom.

“The economic crisis…

Cryptocurrency Industry, Bi-Partisan Group of Senators Criticize Provision of Senate-Passed Infrastructure Bill

On August 10, 2021, the U.S. Senate passed the USD 1 trillion infrastructure bill, known formally as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (Infrastructure Bill). The Infrastructure Bill includes provisions for approximately USD 550 billion in new federal spending over 10 years on various transportation, broadband, utilities and other infrastructure projects.

Various revenue raising provisions are earmarked to offset the additional spending. Among those revenue raising provisions, the Infrastructure Bill contemplates that USD 28 billion in income tax attributable to the disposition of digital assets will be collected over 10 years. The Infrastructure Bill anticipates generating this revenue by facilitating compliance with digital asset users’ tax payment obligations by imposing reporting requirements on ‘‘brokers’’ of ‘‘digital asset’’ transfers. Digital assets for purposes of these amendments is meant to include cryptocurrencies.

Amazon posted a crypto job, causing Bitcoin prices to soar

Amazon listed a job opening for a digital currency and blockchain product lead, sending cryptocurrencies soaring Monday.

Bitcoin climbed to a six-week high of nearly $39,043, while ethereum reached $2,363. Dogecoin was last trading at about 22 cents per coin, giving it a $28.8 billion market cap. As of Monday afternoon, both bitcoin and dogecoin had soared more than 14% over the past 24 hours, according to Coinbase. And ethereum went up nearly 12% over that period.

Typically, when Amazon is rumored to enter a new market, stocks of soon-to-be rivals tumble. But Amazon’s job listing had the opposite effect Monday, generating buzz about the tech company’s future involvement with cryptocurrencies and its potential to further legitimize the nascent digital currency sector.

In Amazon’s listing, which was posted Friday, the company says it is looking for someone with a “deep understanding” of the “cryptocurrency ecosystem and related technologies.”

The role would be part of Amazon’s payment acceptance and experience team, according to the job description, perhaps implying that the e-commerce giant could accept cryptocurrencies as payment in the near…
