army: Army rescues 205 people stranded in Himachal Pradesh | Shimla News

MANALI: Army’s Dogra Scouts rescued 205 people, mostly tourists, who were stranded along the Kinnaur-Kaza highway on Monday evening following snowfall, given shelter and even meals. Arrangements were made for night stay of 205 people in Army camps and all of them were given meals.
Col Nitin Mittal of Dogra Scouts said, “A total of 205 people staying in the camps were also given meal and medical facilities. Many were able to talk to their family members through satellite phone.” Passengers of more than 50 light vehicles and a bus were stranded after snow blocked the highway to Spiti valley. Also, given the safety of the people, vehicles were not allowed to move beyond Sumdo check post.
Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is clearing snow from Sumdo to Kaza. Although the road was open, it was still dangerous to drive due to slippery conditions. The Spiti administration has asked tourists not to come towards Kaza.
Kaza SDM Mahendra Pratap Singh said the Kaza-Sumdo road had been blocked at multiple points over the night, leading to stalled traffic. “Some tourists were taking the risk of coming towards Kaza and have been asked to stay at their present location until driving conditions become safe. I along with DSP and naib tehsildar met the stranded people at Sumdo. Those who wanted to go towards Kinnaur have been sent immediately after Malling top has opened for traffic,” he said.
A large number of tourists are still attempting to reach higher regions despite warning and trying to go to Spiti from both Shimla and Manali route. Many tourists managed to go beyond Gulaba and wanted to go till Rohtang on Tuesday. The administrations in different locations are requesting tourists not to take risk for few days.

Satellite antenna maker with no.1 market share in maritime VSAT

Intellian Technologies is a leading provider of satellite antennas, holding the largest global market share in maritime VSAT (very small aperture terminal). The company provides various types of solutions for satellite communication, including VSAT, FBB (fleet broadband), TVRO (TV receive-only), flyaway antenna (land-based transmitting-receiving antenna), and gateway antenna. As of 1H21, Intellian Technologies generates 70% of sales from VSAT, 10% from TVRO, and 6% from FBB.

LEO VSAT business to benefit from growing metaverse infrastructure

We focus on the strong growth potential of Intellian Technologies in the LEO (low earth orbit) satellite communication market. The company has successfully expanded into the LEO VSAT market by securing a supply contract from OneWeb. OneWeb is preparing to deliver LEO satellite services for all regions north of 50 degrees latitude (UK, Alaska, Northern Europe, Greenland, Iceland, etc.), with plans to launch a constellation of 648 LEO satellites by 2022 and expand service areas.

The LEO satellite communication market is in its nascent stage with OneWeb, Space Exploration Technologies (Starlink), and Amazon competing to secure early leadership and set to face more competition from many other big tech companies. Expansion of the metaverse ecosystem requires a broader communication infrastructure with no shadow areas. Climbers toast to remember epic climb

It was September 2001, three days after 9/11.

Airports in North America were shut down – Toronto and Vancouver among them. Hundreds of planes sat silent, waiting for the okay to take the hordes of stranded world travellers back home.

We were booked to fly to Africa and climb Kilimanjaro. Eight type-A lads (three from Tsawwassen) who didn’t like hearing ‘No’.

We’d bought our tickets. We were raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Canada, and we’d been training hard. Nothing was going to stop us from getting on our flights, not even Bin Laden.

We left on the first flight to Europe. We flew non-stop to Amsterdam then Moshi, Tanzania, the bustling town at the foot of Kilimanjaro. Two of our group from Toronto arrived in Tanzania without their luggage. No clothes, no gear, and no very important satellite phone for me to do radio interviews with CBC on the way up. Luckily, I had a miracle contact. My seat mate on the flight down eastern Africa was the CFO of the Tanzanian Telephone Corporation. I phoned him in Dodoma, the capital, and he set the company looking for the one satellite phone they had in the bush. They delivered it to us, battery charged, the morning our climb began.

It was a magical trek all the way up the Machame route, six days led by our ever-smiling guide Erik who gave each of us our own Swahili name.

We filtered water together, ate together, slept together, and played cards with frozen, sticky fingers late into the night, usually 9 p.m.! The food was excellent. The only thing we weren’t wild about was the green soup. Hot water and what?

Inmarsat: IOT to overtake cloud computing for mining

New research by Inmarsat, the world leader in global mobile satellite communications, reveals that investment in the internet of things (IoT) is set to overtake cloud computing, next generation security, big data analytics and other digital transformation technologies across the mining sector in the near future. Mining respondents reported plans to invest the greatest proportion of their IT budget on IoT projects over the next three years.

IoT has reached a high level of maturity across most organizations, with mining businesses now planning to spend an average of $2.7 million on their IoT investments through 2024. While IoT accounted for an average of 7.5% of a typical mining organisation’s IT budget between 2017 and 2020, businesses are planning to spend 10.4% of their IT budgets on IoT projects over the next three years.

Planned investments in IoT are notably higher than those earmarked for other Industry 4.0 technologies, including cloud computing (8.6%), big data analytics (7.5%), next generation security (7.5%) and machine learning (5.6%).

In addition to receiving more investment than other technologies vying for IT budgets, the new research also reveals that the mainstream adoption of IoT across the mining sector is already making a significant difference in terms of operational cost savings to many organizations. On average, mining respondents report that IoT projects currently save their organizations 11% of their yearly costs. In the future, respondents expect to achieve an average of 15% cost-savings in 12 months’ time, rising to 25% in three years and 33% in five years’ time.

IoT budgets for the mining sector are slightly lower than the average of $2.8 million across all industry sectors, with an average planned spend on IoT projects in the next three years of $2.7 million by a typical mining organisation.
